I have always loved words and language. Translation. Etymology (not to be confused with entomology). I love the sound that words in foreign languages make as they roll off the tongue. I like the way the same word in the same language has different connotations in different regions or countries. I am fascinated by dialects and am interested in what they say about their speakers and the places they live.
So the article I read this morning in the New York Times interested me. It reminded me that language is more than mere words -- and that certain words, like "uppity," and "disrespectful," when used in certain contexts, have connotations and histories we can not, or should not, ignore.
